NLP Turns Procrastination Into Jubilation!
National Procrastination Week is winding down in the USA, and I just cannot put this blog post off any longer! Okay, all kidding aside procrastination is a problem for many people and the “infomation age isn’t helping anyone to overcome this problem. It is really easy for us all to get caught up in checking email and tweeting about what you had for lunch as time marches on and work deadlines get passed by.
We often put off tasks that are perceived as unpleasant, boring, difficult, you name it. A longtime procrastinator has a multitude of excuses at the ready for not getting tasks done. There is no research that points to gender or intelligence as being a factor in this issue. What the research does show is that it is a growing problem, and some experts believe that if those intrusive little notification tones ceased to exist, productivity and the economy would once again soar.
Prioritizing differently or limiting the time one spends on social media and email could be a solution for this type of procrastination. People could also change "shoulds” into wants. This also applies to “have to” “ought to” and “musts”. When we feel obligated to others we could feel inhibited, just by changing these types of statements to “wants” then we take responsibility for doing the task.
So this may sound like good advice, but how does a person make that shift to want to wash the dishes or write the company’s white paper? If we use some NeuroLinguistic Programming that shift can happen easily. Specifically, use Richard Bandler’s Godiva Chocolate Pattern. In just a few minutes you can be washing or writing. Whatever needs to be done can be precieved as fun or rewarding in some way.
